Sat Nav Sales Decline as App Usage Increases

iOS 6 maps with TomTomShipments of private navigation devices are in decline as more everyone is ready to download free and paid-for mobile apps that supply turn-by-turn maps. While shipments of PNDs declined by 5m between 2011 to 2012, from 33m to 28m, monthly users of turn-by-turn mobile apps have grown from 105m to 150m. Greater than half this usage comes from apps that pre-installed on handsets from the likes of Google, Nokia, Apple and Blackberry. Berg Insight, which created the report, predicts that PND use will fall to 17m by 2017. Although portion of this decline is attributed to lower consumer spending after the financial crisis, there’s a saturation in lots of mature markets that isn’t being countered by shipment growth in Eastern Europe, Latin America and India. The devices are facing competition from smartphone apps, either pre-installed, free or paid-for, and could struggle more as car manufacturers offer satnav in-car as standard, the report said. Publishers remain split on native versus app debate: ad:tech speaker

SAN FRANCISCO – An MIT Technology Review executive on the ad:tech San Francisco 2013 conference said that publishers still face ongoing challenges in relation to developing mobile applications for smartphones and tablets. During the “Why Publishers Hate Apps: HTML5 & the way forward for Publishing” session, the chief discussed the professionals and cons of HTML5. The session was moderated by Christopher Peri, chief technology officer of VentureBeat. “HTML5 isn’t always done,” said Jason Pontin, editor in chief of MIT Technology Review.  ‘It’s a piece in progress.” Current status Today’s smartphones and tablets provide publishers with the way to mimic a digital representation of past print models and lure back subscribers and advertisers.  However, although initially touted so that you can build a brand new subscription model to pay for content, publishers soon came to achieve that apps create walled gardens and struggled to get consumers’ attention, given the accessibility of alternative curated sources on the internet.  Additionally, mobile heavyweights, along with Google and Apple, have placed high demands on single-copy sales that cut into subscription revenues. Clear Channel Launches NFC and QR Poster Campaign

Out-of-home media company Clear Channel has launched a nationwide campaign, developed in partnership with Creative Orchestra, to boost consumer awareness of its NFC (Near Field Communication) and QR code posters. Across 10,000 of Clear Channel’s Mobile Platform bus shelter and roadside panels nationwide, the campaign will encourage to tap their smartphone to the poster, or scan a QR code, for the possibility to win £1,000 of technology vouchers.  “We are really involved in the innovative possibilities our Mobile Platform offers for both advertisers and the shopper,” said Clear Channel UK commercial director Chris Pelekanou. “We have launched this campaign to offer the general public a simple, fun, free way of familiarising themselves with a brand new way of interacting and fascinating without-of-home.”  Tried & Tested The campaign is a superb use of NFC within the outdoor arena, and the contest should help provide an incentive for consumers to make the leap with this relatively new channel. Canadian publishers eye Windows 8 to strengthen reader engagement

April 5, 2013 Ten Canadian publishers including The Toronto Star and Elle Canada have rolled out Windows 8 applications to have interaction with readers via their smartphones and tablets. The publishers have partnered with Polar Mobile and are using the MediaEverywhere Platform. US Dataworks and RDM to give Mobile and RDC Solutions

Cloud payment-processing solution provider US Dataworks has expanded its partnership with RDC solution provider RDM Corporation to supply more flexible mobile solutions to US Dataworks’ bank customers. The terms of the agreement enables US Dataworks to supply RDM’s cloud and mobile RDC platforms through its national reseller channel at a low deployment cost. Bank customers could be ready to offer consumers RDC and mobile capabilities, and may have access to risk mitigation tools and mobile RDC set-up/configuration from RDM. “We are pleased to expand our strategic alliance with US Dataworks to provide our RDC solutions to the community bank market,” said Randy Fowlie, President and CEO for RDM Corporation. “US Dataworks is definitely positioned to improve existing relationships and grow its client base by offering cloud and mobile based RDC solutions.”
