BT Returning to the Mobile Operator Market

BT looks set to come back to the united kingdom mobile market, after chief executive Ian Livingston said it was “highly possible” that BT-branded SIM cards will be available by this time next year, in an interview with The Telegraph.

During the Ofcom auction earlier this year, BT  paid £186.5m for two x 15 MHz of two.6 GHz spectrum, and 1 x 20 MHz of two.6 GHz (unpaired) spectrum – less than the mobile operators who also acquired spectrum.

The move will be in keeping with BT’s recent emphasis on expanding the bundles it offers customers – last week, it added Premier League matches to its sports TV offering.

The last time BT had a presence within the mobile operator market was with BT Cellnet, now O2, which was acquired by Telefónica in 2005.
