BBM Money in Indonesia Registers 60k in 3 Months
The peer-to-peer payments service provided by Monitise at the Blackberry platform has registered 60,000 users in its launch country to date. Blackberry launched the service in Indonesia in February with Permata Bank and hopes to get some 200,000 users by the top of the year. With Blackberry the number 1 selling smartphone, making up greater than half the smart handsets, the number seems a bit modest in a rustic of nearly 250m people. BBM Money gives BlackBerry Messenger customers in Indonesia the power to immediately create, access and make real-time payments to their BBM contacts from their Mobile Money account.
Samsung to purchase 10 Per Cent Stake in Local Rival Pantech
Samsung is buying a ten per cent stake in its local rival Pantech, South Korea’s third largest handset maker. The deal, reported by the Yonhap news agency, was worth around 53 billion won (US$47.6m) for the struggling manufacturer, which was put right into a debt rescheduling programme in 2007. Samsung is now Pantech’s third largest investor after Qualcomm and the state-run Korea Development Bank. Samsung and Pantech have already got strong ties in semiconductors and displays – Pantech buys parts from the tech giant – demonstrating the volume of bilateral cooperation in some areas of the smartphone business. Pantech currently sits behind LG as a mid-tier Android manufacturer and trades within the US, Japan, China and a few areas of the ecu.
Apple Still #1 Global Brand
Despite a slowdown in iPhone sales and more competition inside the tablet market, Apple remains WPP’s most dear global brand, worth $185bn in 2013, but with growth of only one per cent. The eigth annual BrandZ top 100 saw Google’s value climb five per cent, moving the corporate from number three to number two inside the list. Its brand value still falls quite far shy of Apple’s at $114bn. IBM is an in depth third inside the ranking with a brand value of $112bn. Microsoft is seventh, a drop of nine per cent and two places, while Samsung is now number 30 within the ranking, attributable to growing market share in high-end smartphones. Budget Smartphones Fuel Southeast Asian Growth
More than 108m handsets were sold within the region within the year to March 2013, with 42.2m smartphones shipped in the course of the period, a rise of 61 per cent at the previous year. This implies an extra $3.4bn was spent by consumers during 2012 on 16m more devices than the former year, in keeping with GfK, and smartphone sales are nearing 50 per cent of all handsets purchases.
